Basic Information on Fats

Fats are an essential part of sound nutrition, but not all fats are the same. By understanding how fats work in the body, knowing the difference between good and bad fats, and eating within the guidelines for daily fat consumption you can have a healthier body and life. Fats have many benefits to our body and should not be cut from your daily intake. Some things that fat helps with are nutrient absorption, cell membrane maintenance, and nerve transmission.

Good fats help promote these benefits while bad fats cause more harm them good. Some problems associated with to much fat intake and bad fats are weight gain, heart disease, raised cholesterol, and even cancer.

Fat is the most calories dense of the 3 macronutrients we eat. It contains nine calories for every gram of dietary fat. This is more then 2 time the amount that protein and carbohydrates have.
